Army, Media Must Collaborate to Secure Nigeria — Maj. Gen. Chibuisi

By Exponent News, Akure – 2nd June, 2025

In a clarion call for unity and responsible reporting, Major General Chibuisi has urged stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Army and media practitioners to combat the nation’s evolving security threats and foster national development.

Speaking during the second quarter edition of the Nigerian Army Media Chat, held in Akure, the General underscored the indispensable role of the media in shaping public perception and influencing national discourse. He emphasized that the media’s power could either support or sabotage national security efforts, depending on how it is wielded.

“The influencing capacity of the media has both positive and negative multiplier effects,” Chibuisi said. “This is often exploited by dissidents to instigate disaffection against the government and its agencies, including the Nigerian Army.”

The event, themed “Military-Media Collaboration: A Panacea for Enhanced National Security and Development,” brought together military officials, other Security Agencies and media stakeholders from across the region. It follows a similar forum held in Gombe in the first quarter of the year.

Chibuisi highlighted that beyond military operations, the Nigerian Army is also adopting non-kinetic measures—like dialogue and stakeholder engagement—to build public trust and promote national unity.

He urged journalists to maintain high ethical standards, avoid sensationalism, and resist the spread of misinformation, stressing that responsible journalism is key to sustaining peace and democracy.

“We have a collective responsibility in shaping the narratives of our national security landscape,” he stated. “Together, we can forge a path toward a safer and more informed society.”

The General also acknowledged the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. O.O. Oluyede for his strategic direction and resource support in making the forum a success.

The Army Media Chat is a quarterly initiative aimed at enhancing transparency, building trust, and deepening civil-military relations across Nigeria.
