As the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO) examinations continue across the country, Mr. Omosule Oluwole, the proprietor of Holy Trinity College, Okitipupa and a seasoned public school principal, has called for strengthened examination monitoring and the adoption of modern technology to tackle the persistent menace of exam malpractice in Nigeria’s education system.

Speaking in an interview during the ongoing external examinations, Mr. Oluwole described the conduct of the exams as “normal and quite helpful,” noting that they serve as a critical benchmark for evaluating both the academic standard of students and the effectiveness of the examination body.

According to him, “This exercise helps measure the standard of examination conducted by NECO, and at the same time, it assists schools in improving their facilities and exam conduct. Independence during examinations enhances educational quality.”

Expressing concern over widespread examination malpractice, Mr. Oluwole proposed practical steps for eradication. He recommended enhanced monitoring, installation of CCTV cameras in exam centers, and continuous sensitization of both teachers and students on academic integrity.

“Proper monitoring will drastically reduce malpractice. If CCTV cameras are installed in all centers, it would curb the malpractice to a large extent,” he stated. “Also, school heads must speak to their teachers and students about resisting the urge to cheat.”

He further suggested that the gradual adoption of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) could significantly reduce malpractice if adequate infrastructure and training are put in place. However, he noted that collaboration from parents and schools remains key in promoting honesty and discouraging unwholesome practices.

“Some parents and schools, unfortunately, encourage malpractice. We must change this narrative if we truly want to improve education,” he emphasized.

Mr. Oluwole’s comments come at a time when stakeholders are increasingly advocating for reforms in the nation’s examination system to ensure credibility, fairness, and academic excellence.
