Ondo State Establishes Senior Secondary Education Board to Boost School Infrastructure

By Exponent News Akure 10th, October 2025.

In a strategic move to enhance the quality and infrastructure of secondary education, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the establishment of the Ondo State Senior Secondary School Education Board (OSSEC).

According to the statement by the Press officer of the  Ministry of education, Bisi Lawani, on behalf of the ministry, she said the new board is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing infrastructure challenges in senior secondary schools across the state. Its creation aligns with a Federal Government directive under the gazetted National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) Act, which mandates states to contribute a 5% counterpart fund towards secondary school infrastructural development nationwide.

Announcing the approval, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, emphasized that OSSEC will work in collaboration with NSSEC to drive impactful infrastructure projects in the state’s senior secondary schools.

“With this approval, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has fully aligned with the Federal Government’s resolve to upgrade infrastructure in our secondary schools,” he said, commending the Governor’s commitment to sustainable educational reform.

Also speaking on the development, Dr. Akindele Ige, Administrative Secretary of the Ministry and a member of the OSSEC establishment committee, explained that the board’s operations will lead to better school management, improved funding, and enhanced learning environments—factors expected to increase student enrollment and academic performance.

Unlike the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), which oversees infrastructure from primary to Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3), OSSEC will specifically manage Senior Secondary Schools (SSS1 to SSS3). Once operational, it will function as an agency under the State Ministry of Education, with a clear mandate that does not overlap with existing educational institutions in the state.
