NOA DG TASKS YOUTH ON PATRIOTISM, CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY AT FUTA ALUMNI REUNION

Date 8th November, 2025

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has tasked Nigerian youths to rekindle their sense of patriotism and civic responsibility as vital ingredients for nation-building.

Issa-Onilu made the call in a keynote address delivered at the 30th Reunion Celebration of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) 1995 Alumni Set, held on Thursday, 6th November, 2025 at the University Auditorium.

The event, which coincided with FUTA’s 35th Convocation Ceremony, drew participants including the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, members of the university management, students, and alumni of the 1995 set.

Speaking on the theme “Reigniting Patriotism and Civic Responsibility Amongst the Youth: The Role of Orientation and Mentorship in Nation Building,” the NOA boss stressed that National progress depends on raising a generation of principled, informed, and civically engaged citizens.

Represented by the South-West Zonal Director of NOA, Mrs. Francisca Salako, he noted that patriotism must go beyond mere rhetoric, describing it as a daily choice to contribute to the common good and uphold the integrity of institutions. He identified orientation and mentorship as the twin pillars capable of transforming young Nigerians into responsible leaders and agents of positive change.

Highlighting some of the Agency’s youth-focused initiatives, the Director-General mentioned the national campus debate, digital platforms such as CLHEEAN and the Mobiliser App, as well as ongoing value re-orientation campaigns targeted at instilling discipline, integrity, and civic consciousness among young people. He added that these efforts align with the National Value Charter, which defines the seven promises of the Nigerian state and the seven commitments expected of every citizen.

Issa-Onilu urged all stakeholders, parents, educators, traditional and religious leaders, as well as policy makers to mentor and inspire the youth, stressing that Orientation serves as the map, and mentorship, the compass, guiding Nigeria towards a brighter future.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, appreciated the NOA Director-General for gracing the occasion and commended the 1995 set for their commitment, donations, and resolve to reunite with their alma mater after 30 years. She urged them to preserve the legacies of the institution and invest in mentoring the younger generation, encouraging them to serve as role models, inspire excellence, and contribute their wealth of experience to sustaining FUTA’s vision of technological advancement and national development.
