Ondo Waste Management Board Steps Up Environmental Compliance in Akure

26th, January,2026

The Ondo State Government has intensified efforts to enforce environmental standards in Akure metropolis following an inspection and monitoring exercise carried out across major locations in the state capital.
Earlier today, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Health and Safety, Sam Bolala, led a team of Environmental Health Officers from the Ondo State Waste Management Board on a compliance tour covering Oyemekun Road, Oja Oba, and Arakale. The exercise focused on assessing environmental sanitation practices, public safety, and the abatement of nuisances in key commercial and residential areas.
The operation, which was supported by Environmental Security Guards for warning and enforcement purposes, was aimed at ensuring a serene, safe, and sustainable environment for residents.
Speaking after the exercise, Bolala noted that the inspection revealed persistent environmental violations, stressing that many residents only comply when regular monitoring and enforcement are in place.
“It became evident that without consistent and adequate surveillance, many people are unwilling to desist from actions that constitute environmental nuisance. This underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and enforcement,” he said.
Bolala commended the dedication and commitment of the Environmental Health Officers involved in the exercise, singling out Sanitarian Dayo Ogedengbe for exceptional performance and professionalism.
He further charged Environmental Health Officers across the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State to adopt a similar proactive approach by conducting routine environmental protection and compliance visits at least once a week, particularly in markets and high-traffic areas.
“Relying solely on monthly environmental sanitation exercises is no longer sufficient, though I understand some of the challenges involved. These challenges will be addressed soon,” he added.
Emphasizing the government’s resolve, Bolala warned that environmental defaulters would face the full weight of the law, urging residents to see environmental protection as a collective responsibility.
“We must all perceive the environment as an extension of ourselves,” he said.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to providing a conducive, serene, and sustainable environment for all residents of the state.
