Ondo Government Dismisses Kidnap, Banditry Reports, Warns Against Fake News
AKURE, June 4, 2026

The Ondo State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging incidents of kidnapping in schools and the presence of bandits within Akure metropolis, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Emmanuel Ajanaku, said the reports had been thoroughly investigated and debunked by both the state government and the Ondo State Police Command following comprehensive security assessments and intelligence gathering.
The government expressed concern over the increasing spread of misinformation, noting that fake news poses a serious threat to public safety, social harmony, and public confidence.
According to the statement, the deliberate dissemination of unverified information creates unnecessary fear among residents and diverts security agencies from their primary responsibility of safeguarding lives and property.
The administration of Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed its commitment to the security and welfare of residents across the state. It also commended the Nigeria Police Force, the Amotekun Corps, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies for their continued vigilance and professionalism in maintaining peace and order.
The government advised residents to rely on official government communication channels, accredited media organisations, and verified social media platforms for information. Citizens were also urged to verify the authenticity of any report before sharing it and to avoid circulating content capable of causing public panic.
While assuring residents that security agencies remain proactive in addressing security concerns, the government called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
It stressed that security remains a collective responsibility and urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies in efforts to sustain peace, stability, and development across Ondo State.
