Mr Chukwudi Danladi Disu (not his real name), a parent who sought admission for his daughter into Fiwasaye Secondary School, Akure, said the admission of his daughter into JSS1 as a day student cost him N123,700.
Mr Disu gave an account of how he spent the money while speaking with our correspondent during the ongoing secondary school admission exercise across the state.
According to him, the amount spent was still moderate compared with the cost of admission into some private schools and Federal Government Colleges, also known as Unity Colleges, where expenses could reach between N500,000 and N600,000.
The parent gave the breakdown of his expenses as follows:
*Two school uniforms, cardigan, beret and two pairs of socks — N29,500
*Locker, chair and painting — N17,000
*Collection of School file — N4,500
*Capturing of students — N2,000
*Sander — N7,000
*Cutlass, hoe, chain, key and key holder — N5,200
*Two brooms — N1,000
*School fees — N29,200
*Passport photograph — N500
*Textbooks and other materials — N27,200
*Photocopy of school fee teller and NIN — N600
*Total — N123,700
He expressed concern that the government should, as much as possible, continue to fulfil its responsibility by providing schools with the necessary infrastructure, including lockers and chairs required by students, rather than school authorities asking parents to provide them.
According to him, previous governments in the state, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, awarded furniture contracts to contractors to supply lockers and chairs to government schools before the commencement of a new academic session.
He said the practice helped to reduce the financial burden on parents during school admission.
Mr Disu also called on the government to practise full-time free education, as he said was promised during electioneering campaigns, in order to reduce the level of illiteracy in society.
According to him, a well-educated society would be easier to govern and could experience less crime because of the level of development that education would bring to the people.
Mr Disu also used the opportunity to advocate better welfare for workers, particularly teachers, who are saddled with the responsibility of imparting knowledge to learners.
The parent further advised the government to continue to beef up security across the state to ensure the safety of residents and learners.
Speaking further, he called on the government to urgently direct the Ministry of Transport to provide speed bumps, speed breakers or zebra crossings around government schools located along expressways.
He said such measures would help reduce road accidents that could occur as a result of excessive speeding by motorists around the schools.
