Stop Looking to Opposition Parties to Save You — ADA Scribe Tells Nigerians
The National Publicity Secretary of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Hon. Leye Igbabo, has urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for their political choices ahead of the 2027 general elections, rather than relying solely on opposition parties to address the country’s challenges.
Igbabo stated this on Saturday while featuring on a political programme on Crest 106.1 FM, Akure, in response to a caller who expressed concerns about the divisions, internal disagreements and lack of unity among opposition parties.
According to the ADA spokesperson, the current state of opposition politics raises questions about the ability of opposition parties to present a united front capable of offering a strong alternative to the ruling party.
He said the divisions among opposition parties had made it difficult for them to coordinate their political activities and build a common platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
Igbabo added that Nigerians should not focus solely on the inability of opposition parties to unite, but should instead pay closer attention to the credibility and intentions of candidates seeking public office.
He noted that political interests often change after elections, urging voters to prioritise their long-term welfare when making electoral decisions.
“The masses should therefore stop blaming or lamenting over the opposition’s lack of cohesion because, head or tail, politicians have a way of connecting themselves after the elections. They are the ones who are feeling the brunt and should take the bull by the horn by properly voting for men and women of integrity who have the true love of the masses,” he said.
The former Ondo State PDP spokesperson observed that presenting a single opposition candidate could be challenging in a diverse country like Nigeria, with its estimated population of about 250 million people and competing ethnic, regional and political interests.
He noted that while some political stakeholders might emphasise regional representation and power rotation, others might prioritise competence and experience in their choice of leadership.
Igbabo therefore urged the electorate to carefully assess candidates based on their character, competence and commitment to public service, rather than being influenced by financial inducements or ethnic considerations.
He also cautioned voters against allowing immediate financial benefits to determine their choices in the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of considering the long-term consequences of electoral decisions.
“Stop blaming opposition parties. Mordecai once told Esther that if she failed to act on behalf of the Jews, help would come from another place. So, if the opposition parties have failed to unite, let the unity of your votes save you from hardships and hopelessness. We have several candidates on the ballot. Use your brains and shine your eyes to identify and consider truly public-spirited candidates,” he said.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to make informed electoral decisions in 2027, emphasising the need to elect leaders who demonstrate integrity, competence and concern for the welfare of the people.
