Plenary Resumption Shifted to March 5 Over Ongoing Budget Defence

The House of Representatives has postponed its plenary resumption earlier scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026, citing the need to conclude ongoing 2026 budget defence sessions by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The decision was communicated in an internal memorandum issued on Monday, February 23, 2026, by the Acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Ibrahim Sidi, under the title “Notice of Postponement of Plenary Session.”
According to the notice, plenary will now resume on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
The postponement, the House said, became necessary as several Standing Committees are yet to conclude their engagements with MDAs on the 2026 Appropriation Bill. The leadership explained that the adjustment would provide lawmakers with adequate time to complete the budget defence process and ensure detailed legislative scrutiny of the proposals.
Part of the memorandum read:
“In light of the ongoing 2026 Budget Defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, which remains substantially incomplete, the Leadership of both Houses hereby directs the postponement of plenary sittings to allow Committees conclude their budget defence accordingly.
“The Leadership regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may cause and urges Honourable Members to utilise the intervening period to further refine and strengthen discourse on the ongoing Budget Defence.”
The House reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and comprehensive review of the 2026 budget in the national interest, while appreciating the understanding and cooperation of members and stakeholders.
The statement was signed by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi.
