Aiyedatiwa Pushes Consensus Strategy to Avert APC Rift Ahead of 2027 Primaries

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has intensified efforts to prevent internal divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging party leaders and aspirants to embrace consensus as the party prepares for its 2027 primaries.
Speaking at a Northern Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting in Owo on Wednesday, the governor warned that unchecked rivalry could undermine the party’s chances in future elections, stressing that unity must take precedence over individual ambition.
He noted that while political aspiration is legitimate, it should not come at the expense of collective interest, pointing out that elective positions can only be occupied by one individual at a time.
Aiyedatiwa explained that the APC constitution provides for both consensus arrangements and direct primaries, but emphasized that consensus would be pursued wherever stakeholders can reach agreement.
According to him, consultations are ongoing among party leadership and aspirants to ensure a peaceful and acceptable selection process. He added that direct primaries would only be adopted if consensus fails.
The governor cautioned that disunity at the primary stage could have far-reaching consequences, insisting that a united front would significantly boost the party’s electoral prospects.
He assured aspirants that their ambitions had been acknowledged and documented, promising that none would be sidelined after the selection process. He also encouraged party members to remain loyal and consistent, noting that dedication would ultimately be rewarded.
On security, Aiyedatiwa reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace across the state, stating that intelligence-driven operations had improved responses to crime, particularly in border communities prone to kidnapping. He also ruled out the possibility of terrorist attacks gaining ground in the state.
The governor further explained that the stakeholders’ meeting forms part of a quarterly consultation framework aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and improving governance feedback. He said rotating the meetings across senatorial districts was designed to promote inclusiveness.
Highlighting ongoing development efforts, he pointed to road rehabilitation projects and broader infrastructure improvements across the state.
In his remarks, APC State Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Kolawole, reinforced the call for discipline and unity, urging members to abide by party decisions and support whoever emerges as candidate.
Similarly, Northern Senatorial District Vice Chairman, Olukayode Adejoro, commended the governor’s leadership, citing infrastructure upgrades and improved security, supported by the Amotekun Corps, as key achievements.
Other stakeholders, including Mrs Yinka Alabi, Kolade Folawummi, and Senator Remi Okunrinboye, also praised the governor’s engagement with party members and ongoing development initiatives.
