NUJ Reabsorbs SWAN, Suspends Five Members Over Anti-Union Activities

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has formally reabsorbed and reintegrated the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) into the Union, while also approving the suspension of five members over alleged anti-Union activities.
The decisions were among the major resolutions reached at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NUJ held in Dutse, Jigawa State, on August 11, 2026.
The meeting, chaired by the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, was attended by National Officers, as well as Chairmen and Secretaries of State Councils.
According to the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NEC resolved to formally reabsorb SWAN into the NUJ family after considering a letter submitted by SWAN National Chairman, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, and his invitation to address the Council.
The Council said the decision was taken in the spirit of unity, professional solidarity and inclusiveness, adding that the current SWAN leadership under Comrade Benjamin is recognised and reintegrated into the NUJ structure in accordance with the relevant provisions and procedures of the Union.
NEC also approved the suspension of five members—two from the Cross River State Council and three from the Kwara State Council—for what it described as anti-Union activities.
The suspended members are Ubon Ekanem and Edem Archibong of the Cross River State Council, as well as Dare Akogun, Mosunmola Ayobami and Usman Adamu Sabi of the Kwara State Council.
The Council urged members to adhere to the NUJ Constitution and utilise established internal mechanisms for resolving disputes.
On the security of journalists, NEC commended security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), for their continued partnership and support towards protecting journalists and media workers.
It also called on journalists and media organisations to maintain professionalism, accuracy and responsibility when reporting terrorism, banditry, insurgency and other security challenges.
The Council cautioned against sensational reporting, glorification of terrorists and criminal elements, or giving undue prominence to their activities in ways that could amplify propaganda or facilitate recruitment.
NEC further endorsed the proposed Northern States Security Summit to be hosted by Zamfara State, describing it as an important platform for stakeholders to develop practical and sustainable solutions to insecurity and improve the protection of journalists and the wider society.
The Council commended the Bauchi State Government for approving and releasing over N400 million for the comprehensive renovation of the NUJ Secretariat in the state, urging other state governments to emulate the gesture.
It also praised the Jigawa State Government for its commitment to mechanised agriculture, noting that the initiative could boost food production, create employment and improve citizens’ livelihoods.
The Union called on journalists and media organisations to pay greater attention to agricultural policies and initiatives aimed at promoting food security, rural development and sustainable economic growth.
NEC appreciated UN Women for its continued partnership with the NUJ, particularly its support for capacity building for women journalists, and reaffirmed its commitment to greater professional opportunities and inclusion for women in journalism.
The Council also resolved to organise two additional national events before the end of 2026 to promote professional development, networking, institutional unity and members’ welfare.
In addition, NEC approved a proposed partnership with a reputable law firm to provide legal representation, advisory services and other legal support to the Union and its members, particularly in states where litigation involving the NUJ arises.
The Council expressed support for Abuja-based lawyer Olubunmi, who is participating in a Guinness World Records initiative aimed at raising awareness and advocacy against gender-based violence.
NEC also resolved to strengthen partnerships with state and local governments, development organisations, security agencies and other stakeholders to advance journalism, improve journalists’ welfare and working conditions, and strengthen media institutions.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to the unity, integrity and institutional strength of the NUJ, urging members, councils, chapels and affiliate bodies to uphold professionalism, mutual respect, solidarity and collective responsibility.
The NEC meeting also expressed appreciation to the Jigawa State Government for its support and hospitality, as well as the NUJ Jigawa State Council for its organisation and commitment towards the successful hosting of the meeting.
The Council said it remained committed to building a stronger, united and professionally responsive NUJ capable of protecting journalists, promoting ethical journalism and contributing meaningfully to national development.
The communiqué was signed electronically by Akorede R. Opeyemi, Assistant National Secretary, for the National Secretary.
